  • accuracy of data and information

  • data quality
  • changing nature of work

The widespread use of computer systems by workforces has caused major changes in the way workplaces operate. For example staff now have the ability to complete their work at home, as effectively sometimes even more effectively at home as they were able to at the workplace(office).
The widespread use of the Internet has even enabled business to exist with limited sometimes even no involvement of an office.
  • appropriate information use
"Information is created to fulfill some purpose, however ofter this same information is also useful in achieving some other purpose." - pg 25 IPT by Samuel Davies
Examples of information that can often be used incorrectly include:
Clients email addresses
credit card checks by employers
Incorrect use of school marks by media outlets, to create a story
  • health and safety
Employers are responsibly to ensure that their workers health and safety risks and hazards and minimised:

Directly involved in the system, ethical issues include copyright, security and privacy.
  • users of the information system
The people who "use" they system.
Involved slightly less in the system, ethical issues include Security and Privacy.

the use of information systems in manufacturing Information systems are used in manufacturing in order to replace humans. This is because technology has the ability to eliminate error, and work for free.
the use of information systems in the traditional fields of observation and recording Information systems have made for major advancements in the traditional fields of of observation and recording. Recorders no longer have to rely on traditional pen and paper methods and can now rapidly share information and no longer have to rely on slower "snail mail" or post methods of data transmission.
global information systems (GIS) Introduction to GIS

GIS in Action

What is GIS?
http://www.gis.com/whatisgis/index.html
  • the purpose involves international organisations
As the GIS is an international project, international cooperation has been vital in order to ensure data integrity within the maps database
  • data and processes are distributed across national boundaries
The social issues that come into play wit the GIS are of Privacy.
Individuals as well as organisation are concerned with the GIS invading privacy of countries and individuals.
The fact that the project is transmitted nationally and internationally increases the opportunity for the data/information involved in the project to be used incorrectly.
describe social and ethical issues that relate to information system users Users are effected by information systems due to the fact that the system effects their lives and they effect the information system , as can be seen in the picture below, users are not directly part of the information system, but do effect it and are effected by it.
The main ethical concern for users is that the information system is not using the users personal information that they are putting into the system for unethical issues that they would not want their information being used for. Also another issue involves the user using they system, it would be unethical for the user to use the system in a way that it was not intended, for example to gain other peoples personal information.
Information Systems in Context
describe social and ethical issues that relate to participants the social and ethical issues for participants are often higher than that for users, this is due to the fact that participants are in direct contact with the system and so have a far greater ability to use it for both ethical and unethical purposes.
Issues that effect participants include:
Copyright, participants have to unsure that inf formation that is going into the system and coming out for their uses has had all of its copyright issues met and dealt with.
Security, Information is the system has to be securely kept safe
privacy that the information of individuals going in and out of the system, does not infringe any privacy issues of the individual.
identify and explain reasons for the expansion of information systems, including advances in technology With advancements in technology so comes advancements of information systems, Information Systems were created in order to make technology expand faster and become more user friendly for humans.
identify and explain reasons for the expansion of information systems, including suitability of information technology for repetitive tasks The expansion of information technology for the use in repetitive tasks is a common source of debate on ethical issues.
By using information systems to complete repetitive tasks, the system is then taking a human who would otherwise do that job out of business.
The advantage however is that computer systems do not make errors and so do a better job of the task. and after purchase work for free.

There are many jobs now that just did not exist in the 1960s, and there are also many jobs that have almost totally disappeared. Make up a list of all
the different types of jobs that have been created since the 1960s and another list of those jobs that have virtually disappeared.
